Thinking about Algae Turf Scrubber Project

Postby bRandom on Tue Feb 16, 2010 1:53 pm

Hi, Yesterday I became aware of this type of simple scrubber and i am frankly wondering why it seems to have fallen out of popularity...if it in fact has. Since I am relatively new to the hobby, I am getting the necessary items to build one today and experiment with one on my own system. But...I wanted to see seasl's members thoughts and opinions first. Then, I stumbled upon the previous meeting topic about a DIY scrubber. Seems im 2 months too late to join seasl since the other DIY project I plan on building in the next month is an acrylic refugium (but im still researching design options {more on this later}). So, since i assume this is already a discussed topic, maybe there is more information on this site on previous blogs. I will look. If anybody has an opinion on this type of filtration, I would appreciate and tips or size reccomendation specs. I planned on following the ideas outlined in this DIY guide http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic89570-4-1.aspx I am also going to build one like this one in a bucket for a friends freshwater 55 gal with one 3 lb. af. cichlid (im thinking it may clear the VERY green water in this freshwater system coupled with regular water changes)
Thanks for any input!
Brandon

A lot of your questions along with what I think is a slightly nicer design can be found in Nick's presentation. I looked around and did not find a link for his slides. I would think someone could post it.

Ya that would be great... thanks I was also trying to think of the best mesh material. Probably not an acrylic or glass panel. I think it would be too smooth to be as effective. Thanks

They have plastic mesh at the larger Michael's craft stores. I saw some in Chesterfield Valley for 39 cents a sheet. It is by the embroidery & cross stitch supplies.

They also sell the mesh at some Walmarts. That's where I found mine at least.

I bought all mine a Michaels. Make sure to get the plastic canvas with the larger holes, the Michaels I go to has two different hole sizes and the larger/thicker sheet is better in my opinion.
