Fragging soft mushrooms question...

Postby mbanvard on Wed Jan 06, 2010 12:48 am

Hello all,

I've got some lovely green soft mushrooms (ricordia-esque), and some of them have wandered/divided onto some plastic grating. But the rest, a dozen or so, are all "land locked" on the original stone.

I would love to "frag" them, but I know that they do not share a stolon (is that the term). How can I remove an individual mushroom and remount it?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
- Michael.

Lets see.

If your goal is to just have more mushrooms.
You could run a razor blade across them on the rock, straight down the middle of the mouth cutting them in to two separate parts.

If your goal is to actually remove them from the rock.
You could scrap them off the rock with a razor blade or heavy duty scissors. Just dig into the rock under the individual mushrooms.

You could cut there heads off  , cut as low as possible leaving some of the stalk behind. The left over stalk should regrow into one or more new mushrooms.

Once removed you can cut the mushrooms into two or four equal pie pieces. If there is still rock attached just glue them to another rock to grow out. If there is no rock rubble attached find a plastic container drill holes in the sides for flow, fill the container half way with some rock and sand rubble, then place the mushroom cuttings in the container and cover the top with cheese cloth to prevent them from escaping. Wait a couple weeks for them to attach to the rock rubble and then glue them to larger rock to grow out. Just make sure there is some flow moving over the container to prevent the mushrooms from rotting.

Can the mushrooms be treated and handled like Zoanthids? - Gloves, out of water for 30 minutes, superglue to attach to new base?

Thanks for the suggestions, Big Fishy.

Pretty similar. I personally never had luck with getting the superglue to stick to mushrooms, unless there is rock rubble attached. They are just to slimy and if the glue did stick the mushroom would be loose with in a day or two :x

Post some pics of the green buggers :D

I'll second the supergule failure. I have had no luck with superglue either.

One thing that I found works well is small shells. They are "dish" like so the shroom has a place to attach, and the cheese cloth, or bridal vail can go over the top and be rubber banded on the underside.

Also, 30 minutes out of the water is no problem at all. The slime coating they get, is a natural defense against low tide.
